Short-list of fonts, colours, layout and design ideas

White
Fuchsia
Black

All these colour will feature in my Digipak. As a group we decided to make the colour Fuchia as our main colour or somthing similar as some of the softwares we used it was hard to find th correct colour. My font will be in black as it stands out almost next to almost any colour. Its also simple and I think the contrast between colour will look good on my Digipak.

Analyse Three Digipaks!!

The Digipak below is one for a reggea music icon Bob Marley. In this digipak you can see the light colours, green, yellow and Red which is shown throughout the whole Digipak. This I felt was important as it is one of the  most noticable difference between a album cover and a digipak. I felt i would imitate this idea in my digipak using my chosen colours. In addition theres a photo of Bob Marley, we can see his body from waist and above suggesting its a meduim close up. This gave me an idea as I felt I may also use a meduim close up of the artist in my digipak, However there are a lot more digipaks that influence my decisions of shots I would use.
Bob Marley Digipak!

This is a Digipak of a well known recording artist Rihanna. There are 2 picture of Rihanna in her Digipak on the one to the left its a meduim close up of Rihanna which is a typical photo used on the front covers of Digipaks. Once again we see thatnthe use of colour is copied fron one panel the other. For example on the first panel there is a brown colour background and the last panel seems like the same photo taken just slightly further away.

Rihanna Recoding Artist Digipak!

This Digipak is olde than Rihanna but they have there similarities. In this digipak there are no photos but have a colour sheme which is reinforced throughout the digipak, similar to the Bob Marley and Rihanna digipaks as they also have a colour scheme imitated throughout.

Analysis of 3 Digi packs

QUEEN:

This is a fairly old digi pack designed and published in the late 80's. You can see the colour scheme is fairly plain and the same image is used throughout. There is only one image used on the front of the digi pack.
The same pattern flows through the digi pack with a simple design that is similar and matches the 'QUEENS' famous and memorable logo.

Christina Aguliera

A modern artist, popular amongst a wide audience. Christina has released a number of albums. One of her most recent album 'stripped' shows her image.

You can see the difference between the older digi packs to the most recent released. The 'Stripped' digi pack primarily shows a vivid image of Christina known to all as being revealing and sexual. You can see the difference between 'Queen' and her digi pack as more modern and a bigger focus on the design rather than just the music.

Bob Marley

Bob Marley the most famous reggae artist to hit our charts. Bob Marleys digi pack has a strong colour theme throughout, focusing on the Jamaican and vibrnt colour theme, this digi pack shows it throughout. The digi pack only uses one large image of Bob Marley still blending into the colour scheme. This digi pack is very similar to 'Queen's mainly focusing on the design keeping it simple.

Analysis of three Digipaks

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins born 5 May 1988, known professionally as Adele is an English singer songwriter. She was the first recipient of the BRIT Awards Critics' Choice and was named the number-one predicted breakthrough act of 2008 in an annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2008. She is a multi-Grammy Awards nominee who has won two awards, Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2009.
The front of her digipak is quite basic as it it a picture of her face , she used two colours them being black and white this is effective as the white contrasts against the black background making the font of the title (her name) stand out. This is simialr to the digipak i want to create as i want to keep it quite basic but effective as she has done here.

Robyn Rihanna Fenty born February 20, 1988, better known as simply Rihanna , is a Barbadian R&B recording artist and songwriter. Born in Saint Michael, Barbados, Rihanna moved to the United States at the age of 16 to pursue a recording career under the guidance of record producer Evan Rogers. She subsequently signed a contract with Def Jam Recordings after auditioning for then-label head Jay-Z.
On this digipak there are 2 images of Rhianna , a full image of her and a meduim close up . At the bottom there are three different images of her , this is effective as it shows the albums she has done already. This didgipak gives me an idea as  for the middle of my digipak i wanted to have a similar image to the one on here of a full length image surrounded by acknowledgements . I also like the meduim to close up image of her as their is no writing but simply her posing.

In this didgipak , it uses a number of colours but in the middle keeps the same theme running through, the front and back however use to differnt colour schemes the front cover is a mix of orange, blue, yellow and black and the back cover is just blue. The half image of Braden is plain but contrasts as he is wearing white against the blue also the colour used on the font also stands out.

Analysis of 3 Digipaks

Phil Collins
Phill Collins was born on the 30th Janurary 1951, he is an English song-writer, drummer and keybordist.Collins sang the lead vocals on several chart hits in the United Kingdom and the United States between 1978 and 1994, either as a solo artist or with Genesis.
As you can see his Digipak is quite simple and varies from a number of images. The front panel consistes of an image of a little boy playing the drums, in my opinion i do not think he should have done this because it has nothing to do with Phil Collins, wether he had been in the video it shouldnt have been done because it is and album based on a whole different songs, not just one. The font looks handwritten which i think works because it gives it a simple look. The black and white gives it an old fashioned look with the blur around the edges which works really well.
The Back which is the middle Panel constists of the image of the artist himself again this doesnt  make sense because he has an image of a boy at the front but then a picture of him self at the back which doesnt make him look like the main artitst, this picture is also bacl and white which corolates with the whole digipak. One thing i noticed was that there are a lot of texts which make the back look over crowded, which i think i wouldnt be botherd to read myself.
The middle Panel which is the last image are just a collage of images of records and record packets this in a way correlates with the whole digi pak because it is all old fashioned and reinforces old fashion entertainment.
if i had saw this in the shops i would have thought that the Genre of this album would have been Rock or Indie.
Keri Hilson
This is Keri Hilson an American R&B songwriter that was born in Georgia in 1982.  This is the Front of her Digipak. This Digipak really does catch my eye because of all the bright pictures and images that are used to make the digi pak stand out more. The title of the album is 'In my own world' so she uses the picture to try and tell a story, this picture of the clouds in the horizon shows that she is looking to the future. The big font looks like spot lights shining which shows her supiriority and her fame. The main picture of her is in black and white which does stand out and shows that it is her album.

The bottom image is the back of her digipak, this does correlate with the front cover, an image of her is used and also the same colour which work well, the same font is also used. The effects that is used in the background gives an image of the night aposing to the image of the sun rising at the front.

Rihanna
This is Rihanna a Bajan/ American R&B recording artist and model contracted with Def Jam Recordings. She started off her career in 2005 with her first album ‘Music of the Sun’ which peaked in the top ten of the Billboard 200; which is the ranking of the 200 highest-selling music albums.
Her album has a combination of gemres including R&B, Pop and Rock. The cover does unfact focus on the genre of rock i think because of the dark theme given, the costume and the make up that is used to rienforce and very dark look,There is also the letter R at the top right hand corner which could indicate her name or 'Rockstar'.The right hand is covering her right eye and her left eye is surrounded by thick black eye liner giving her a feline look.

The back of the album cover also shows characteristics of rock music established by the particular style that has been created for the artist. Her body language is aggressive towards the audience perhaps showing she is capable of defending herself and not scared to do so. i noticed that the text is in the same Ariel font used for the album’s title on the front cover, this again shows the correlation and link between the front and the back cover. I would say that the whole album is very dark and simple but very effective on the audience, although the colours are simple it still is eyecatching and makes you want to look at the smallest detail.
As you can see the Cd also has a link between the the package, it is very simple and consists of the letter are that looks like it has been carved by a knife.

Comparison between original video and ours

The song that we had chosen was call 'No substitute lover' by Estelle. The song had already had a original video for it, so we knew that we had to make something different, even something better if you would call it that. Unfortunalty we cant put the original video up because embedding was disabled, but the link for the video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLb1Iwkt2R0

The artist that we had made up is called Indiya not estelle so we tried to make something totally different. In the video we had edited we tried to put in the idea that she was happy to have her friends around her, as you can see in the first seqeunce we have long shots and close ups of her walking down the park with her friends and basically having a good time, sending a message that she does not need any boy instead she has her friends whereas in the orignal video we just get medium shots and long shots of Estelle singing the chorus.

I noticed that in the video she edits it by adding fade video transactions to show that the boy is cheating on her however in our video we use this transactions to show the good times between the male and the female.

i would say that both our video show different interpretations of the meanings of the song

[NOT FINISHED]

Postive and Negative feedback

After getting together all our shots , we started to edit them on final cut pro, whilst doing that we reaslised we didnt have enough shots, we also didnt sing the whole song all the way through and also sang parts of the song leaving us with very few camera shots. When putting them on the time line we started of with scenes in the park then moved to the green screen then back again, when are teacher came to view our video she said this wasnt a good idea as in every video whilst singing a chrous it dosent cut to another scene. Looking back on this we then reaslised that we had to film more shots using that advise that we were given . We where also told to bring in Feelando earlier in the video as it would be confusing if you were just to see him towards the end although the lyrics tell the story. As we had a lot of editing to do because we thought it would be better to start again. After gathering all our shots for the second time we found out that it was alot easier as it started to come along. We then started to put it onto a timeline and added transitions, once our teacher looked at it for a second time , the feedback she gave was positive.

Analyse Students Previous Work!

Adam, Lisa, Nasima & Sayvita from 283goswell on Vimeo.

During one of our previous lessons we was given a chance to look at some of the previous student work. I felt this was very beneficial and helped me and my group take the positives and negatives away from filming a music video and apply these positives to ours. It gave our group a range of ideas and shot varieties to use to make our video stand out from the rest. I felt this video is unique itself becaus eof the use of the colour "red" which stands out completely, especially as the rest of the video was in "black and white".
This picture is a small indication of what Adam, Lisa, Nasima, Amp and sayvita did.

We have finally finished!

After a lot of hard work we have finally finished our video. It was a successful project with all roles played equally.  As a group we worked well together, directing and filming, our scheduled filming days were always well planned and we were mostly successful with the footage, although we did have a stage where we panicked and we felt worried we managed to get feedback from our teachers and were able to produce a better final video.

Finished video

This is our finished video and we are very proud of what we have acomplished as in the beggining we thought that we would not get it done and that everything would be done last minuit, but in reality all we had to do was film more and stay focused to get this video finished as the due day was round the corner. We had gone through a lot of challenges to get this video of how we wanted it, at first the video had no meaning to the song itself and we felt as if the shots had been placed in any order, but we went to lunch time workshops to get the full oppotunity as the completing the video was important to us. We sat done and watch the rought cut to see what didnt work and what we could keep, by doing this we also had to go back to the shots that we had filmed to see what options we still had as there was no time for filming, bit by bit we placed the possible shots down the time line to see they worked, if they didnt we would delete it and find another alternative. We are particularly happy with the whole video, the editing, shots and mise en scene. We worked really hard to get the lypsynch precisely, also we tried to put different effects to add emphasis

Teacher Feedback

Hello group 8
Good to see your rough cut up here.  Don't forget that you must also post a summary of the feedback that you got from your teacher along with details around how you inted to act upon this feedback for your final video.

Rough Cut Video

Our Rough Cut is a slight preview of how our intial music video is going to look.It gives a brief outline of some of the mise en scene, shots and location that was filmed.
our techer had given us a lot of feed back about our un finished video. At first we were not really happy about what she had told us about the shots and how we needed to change it, but as we watch the video back we realised that at this point criticism was vital as we needed the video to be at its best.
She had told us that on the chorus the clip was left too long  and that we had to some how cut it down or add a new clip. We where told that this rough cut had not made sense we placed different shots with different locations to different parts of the song so there was no structure to our video. when she told us this, we were quite upset as we thought we didnt have that much shots to even transform the video, at this point we had to act quickly as the due date was round the corner. Another criticism we had about this rough cut, was the representation of of the Black male in the hoody, we thought about it and we came to a conclusion that we had to change it because it was a cliche. We noticed that the order of the video we had put together was not according to our story board which was a problem because it meant that we did the video from the top of our heads, all we had to do was change around the shots and make it similar to the story board. As a group we decided that we had to do more filming sessions to make the video complete.

Pitch

The pitch contains our groups initial ideas for our music video, I chosen song was 'No Substitute love' by Estelle, we chose this song as we thought we could film a varirty of shots for it as it would make a good music video. Our target audience is 17-25, as we thought teenagers and adults would be able to relate to the lyrics of the song.
It shows our locations. Where and what time we will be filming on what days of the week.
What type of shots will be needed e.g medium shots , close ups. and what shots will be used for each scene, it also contains our concept , which our group chose to follow the theme of disjuncture as it dosent tell a story. Our idea was to film a walk through for each scene. At the end of each scene we would film a shot and then film a high angled shot then bring the camera down into a new location. It also states who we think would us.

Filming Photos!!

This is a photo of Parris filming me and feelando as we do the shot when we are walking down.

This is a shot to show how in this group we work together and we take turns tofilm as we feel the eqaul opportunity allows us to reach ou full potential with our filming.

A shot of yoland ewhile she is singing to show the reality of the video as she is singing along to the song playing in the background.

A very cold day but we braved the cold and tried to feel comfortable with what we had. A very natural picture of again parris filming Yolande whilst doing the panning shot.

These are some of the photos we took whilst filming, many of the photos will be used for our digipak ..
We took shots of the location, as this will be seen in the background in many of the scenes in the music video.

Teacher feedback

Hello group 8
Where is your pitch??  This should have been posted a long time ago, and should have been joined by plenty of photos from your filming sessions along with a discussion around how the filming has been going.  Don't fall behind with your blogs....

Analysis of a Previous Student Video

Adam, Lisa, Nasima & Sayvita from 283goswell on Vimeo.

In our previous lesson we were given a chance to see work from other students . I was glad to see a variety of different videos as it gave me a chance to see what i could do with the shots and camera compostion but also how i could improve on this . It also showed me how they used the camera , mise en scene to match the lyric of the song. This was an example of , in this video there is a numerous amount of camera shots , especially close ups of her mouth when she's singing , i felt that this was a good idea as the whole video is in black and white except from her lips and the buses which were red. The choice of location also matched the genre of the song as she is trying to spread love around the world, she filmed it on a busy high road where people go to shop. I also liked the way she used people raging from different age groups. In my opinion this can be targeted to any audience.

List Of Potential Songs!!

One the the songs we wanted to recreated was kyla who sang a very popular song called "daydreaming" the song is very popular in urban parties and is know by virtually everyone. The song is a fast pasted song vibrate and has alot of character to it which we felt will be great for a video which is why it was one of our choices.

We also had a girl pop band called "The Saturdays" the saturdays are a teen pop sensation and have many song for all types of ages. We was considering doing one of the saturdays hit single called missing you.

Our final choice in our shortlis was a great song by "Estelle" called "No Substitute Love" we loved the beat of the song and the original video so we was instantly inspired to try and create our own version.

Final Song choice

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLb1Iwkt2R0
The Final song choice for our video will be ESTELLE 'NO SUBSTITUE LOVER'
It seems that in the actual video most of it was done in the studio with a white background flattering around, there is not that much illustration apart from the flash backs of other poeple. I noticed there is a close up shot of her phone, as a group we had decided that we will not be using a phone because it happens in videos a think we should be different The video portrayes her as being angry with the boy that had cheated on her but at the same time not caring, we have decided to change that idea and do it so that the main singer is happy and getting on with her life. We know that we are not marked based on our performance so we have included different shots from beggining to end which will work with the song.
Most importantly we want to have a video totally different to hers, and we feel that we can achieve this in many ways.

Short list of potential songs

The Saturdays
The song we thought to do was a Pop song by the Saturdays called 'Missing you'
We thought the saturday could be a potential choice not just because we liked the song but we knew that with the song we could do a lot with the video in terms of mise-en-scene, camera angles and editing .
Kyla
The song we would have chosen is a Funky house song in terms of genre called 'Daydreaming'. This was one of our potentials because we thought that because it has an up beat, we could do a lot with how to conduct our video.
Estelle
Our final song choice is an R&B song called 'No substitute lover' by Estelle reason for this is because we feel that it will make a good video, our group has a lot of ideas to put foward which we think will work. We are going to do this totally different from the original video, we also decided that we wouldnt do the typical chiched type video but something different to illustrate a good video.
