Question 1 - In whats ways does your media product use, develope challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

After watching different videos, by similar artist within the R&B genre we  used the use of shots that we felt where very common in music video of such genre. For example above is a screen shot of a side angle shot of the artist "Estelle". I felt this was very good shot to imitate because it hides the over side of the artist face, which I decided to take as an inspiration for my digipak.
This is a screen shot of our finished music video. As you can see the similarity of the shot; they both show one side of the artist also gives the idea that we don't really know the artist except what we see on the television, whereas other genre's of music really connect to the audience as if the artist fan are there friends. However because of the music genre this wouldn't be practical.
Here I got the front cover of my digipak. In the photo you can see her face is at an angel as if she is hiding her face. Below are some photos of other established artist that have similar shots in there videos and images:

So far I focused on my group's use of camerawork and how it is similar to real media products of a specific genre. However during the planning and constructing our animatic storyboard we looked at different R&B music videos narratives. You see a 'narrative' is  a story that is created in a constructive format that describes a sequence of events, with this said we felt to keep the audience engaged we use a non-linear narrative structure. This narrative structure is highly common within the R&B genre and is usually a cliche when used however we felt it would be most appropriate for our music video to do so. Above is a music video for Ne-Yo's single 'So sick' i feel this is conveyed a idea of what we tried to create at during the music video we see images of the artist past good memories and bad which come together to reinforce the meaning of the song which is the artist missing his Ex. This is so similiar to our music video below because the song is about infidelity and within the music video we see good and bad memories of the artist relationship which create a story to again reinforce the songs meaning.

Different genre's of music have different artists therefore depending on the genre of music, music videos will differ. For example Green Day single 'Holiday' from the moment the music starts the editing is very rapid almost no longer than 3 seconds on each shot. This may sound outrageous however any slower wouldn't look very effective as the editing fits with the pace of the music. If you listen long enough its almost seems as if theirs a cut every time you hear a drum beat. Green Day is essentially an American Punk Rock Band. This suggest that the rock genre consist of fast paced editing.

Whereas on the other hand the R&B genre consist of a more slow or 'controlled' editing as it sort of cuts at the end of every other 'bar' rather than more or less every word. In our music video we tried to create just that as, if you look at our video the speed of the editing for most parts is fairly longer compared to music video in the 'Punk Rock' genre thus Green Day music video 'Holiday'.

  1. Hi Feelando

Some good initial comments (though check your spelling - "angle" not "angel" but you concentrate a little too much on the specifics on camerawork. You need to think about the video as a whole - what other points does your video borrow from professional videos, in terms of style, in terms of narrative, editing, camerawork. There are some very specifc ways it's the same and some ways in which it differs from other videos - what are they?
